Top 10 Tanzania Travel Tips

Travelling to new places is always a bit tricky when you don’t know the ins and outs of not only the location but the culture as well. This statement holds true in the Eastern African country of Tanzania. Don’t worry, though! We’re here with the top 10 Tanzania travel tips that will make it a lot easier for you to visit this beautiful country:

  • Dealing with Tanzanian Traffic Police

Although most of the police force are wonderful, many traffic police officers are waiting to hand out tickets to drivers. If you feel you do not deserve the tickets, do not argue back, but ask for an official receipt and refuse to pay on the spot, instead saying that you will pay at the nearest station. This should help keep them off your back.

  • Avoid drinking Tanzanian tap-water

Bottled water is very cheap in Tanzania, so it is best to bring it along instead of relying on tap water, which is unhygienic and can make your stomach upset.

  • Cherish the smaller details

Although most would travel just to see lions, cheetahs and other big game, one crucial adjustment to make the trip perfect is to zoom in and look at the small threads that weave together the ecosystems of Tanzania. Of course, you are bound to see lions at some point and can they be found in many other places, but some species, like the colourful Banded Sunbird or the Zanzibar Red Colobus, which are endemic to Tanzania can only be seen in their forested homes.

  • Remain respectful of religion

With the main religions in Tanzania being Islam and Christianity, there are certain areas in which you should dress conservatively, out of respect. This goes especially for Stone Town. Also, make sure to take permission before taking a photograph which includes some of the locals.

  • Transportation

Transport around Tanzania is mainly provided by bus or dalla dallas, both of which can get really crowded. Although driving around is a bit rough in most areas, the routes between the northern parks are perfect for a road trip and, on top of saving you some travel fees, it also provides a wonderful opportunity to appreciate just how beautiful Tanzania is.

  • View the spectacle through your eyes, not through a camera lens

Many go to Tanzania in hopes of seeing amazing creatures and landscapes, taking pictures of all they can. In no way is that wrong, but remember to take a moment just to truly take in the sights with your own eyes and store it as a great memory.

  • Do Your Research

If you want to plan a trip to Tanzania, you really have to plan it out. Don’t leave any details to guessing or assuming. Contact the staff or management of the park you plan to visit, read up on what itinerary would be needed at which destinations.

  • Don’t forget to tip

Tipping is very important in Tanzania. It is appreciated and sort of expected to tip the hard workers who help you with things. However, don’t let yourself be pushed around either, know when to say no. For example, if you ask someone to take a picture for you and they ask for a tip, that’s not exactly reasonable. On the other hand, if someone helps you with your luggage, or serves you at a restaurant, tipping is appreciated!

  • Have an extended stay

There are so many things to do in Tanzania! Go for a safari, have fun mountain climbing, seaside swimming, and hot air ballooning. The only way to get the most out of this trip is to stay for a bit. There should be no rush to get in and out as soon as possible, so take your time!

  • Travel in Groups

This is especially important at night time. Although the country is filled with friendly joyous people, there are some, like in every other country, here and there who aren’t worth the trouble. Stay together in case you wish to head out at night.
