First-timer’s Guide to Tanzania

Have you made the choice to visit Tanzania? This is the land of both the highest and lowest points in Africa, with Mount Kilimanjaro at 5895 meters high and the Tanganyika floor which is 352meteres below sea level. The country has some magnificent beaches too in the Zanzibar archipelago.

Tanzania is full of amazing sights to see and is rich in wildlife. Here you can enjoy different types of safari that take you right to the heart of all that is wild and free. When you think of Tanzania and safari the first thought that comes to mind is Serengeti but Tanzania is not just Serengeti and the Great Migration, there are many national parks in the country and each one is a sight to behold. You can go on safaris in Ruaha national park, Lake Manyara national park, Arusha national park, Selous national park, Mikumi national park and more. You should research more about the national parks before you start your safari.

For the first time traveler to Tanzania there are a few things you need to know before you embark on the journey. Climate changes as you traverse the country. If you want to observe the wild animals, the best time is during the dry season in January and February. The animals congregate at the available watering holes which makes them easy to see.

For those who prefer to travel when it is less hot in Tanzania, the months of June to August are cool. You can get out and walk long distances without the sun bearing down on you. You will however want to avoid the rainy seasons as the roads are not in the best conditions and often cars get stuck in the mud.

During the warmer months, you can carry casual light clothes but jackets will keep you warm in the early mornings.

As for what to see there is everything in Tanzania from UNESCO world heritage sites to its breathtaking landscape filled with animals both big and small. Speaking of world heritage sites, Tanzania has 7 one of which is the Ngorongoro crater, the largest caldera in the world and the world-renowned Serengeti national park.

Everyone who thinks of Africa has visions of wildlife. Tanzania has over 100 different varieties of snakes, as well as over 6000 species of birds.

But there’s more to Tanzania than its wildernesses. During your trip make a visit to the national Museum situated in Dar es Salaam. If you are in Arusha there is the national history museum to check out. Here you will learn about some old cultures in the region.

Don’t forget to seek out the Kondoa rock art sites. These huge outcrops feature art from ancient hunters and gatherers that can be as old as a thousand years.

The islands in the Zanzibar and Mafia archipelagos provide the visitor with wonderful beach and untamed nature experiences as is the case with Mafia Island. The main island of the Zanzibar archipelago is Unguja (commonly referred to as Zanzibar) and is a great destination for people who love the ocean. You can take part in fun filled activities in the water such as kite surfing, snorkeling, diving etc.

Tanzania is known for its cultural diversity being home to more than 125 different cultures. The most famous tribe in Tanzania is the Maasai and you can interact with them especially when you are around the Serengeti area.
