Observing the exotic flora and fauna, or looking at the stunning views can be life changing and inspiring! Here is a packing list to improve your Mount Kilimanjaro trekking trip and help you prepare for the unforgettable experience!

When packing, tourists must consider the weather. The dry season goes on from July to October, and rains are sparse even in November and December. The region gets warmer in January and February, and experiences its wet season from March to May, when rains are heavy.

The Backpack

The backpack should be lightweight and of good quality, ideally with an attached rain cover. Some backpacks have attachments for trekking poles and water bottles, so they increase convenience and ease. It is a good idea to carry a waterproof duffel bag or rucksack as well.

Clothes

Carry a high quality wind and waterproof breathable hooded jacket. Thin fleece gloves can prove to be useful in the mornings if it’s cold, and at the summit. A cap or hat can be helpful in protecting against the sun. The best way to adjust to the mountain’s temperature is to dress in layers, so a layer can be added or removed whenever needed. The outer layer must be waterproof and windproof. Light hiking pants or warm waterproof pants ensure comfort. Tourists can wear a fleece or a down jacket which is warm, and light to pack. Carrying a scarf can also prove to be helpful in protecting from dust and harsh weather. An insulated jacket is a must-have, as it is essential for cold nights.

Shoes

Hiking boots are vital in ensuring that the trekking trip is perfect. One should wear shoes that are comfortable, waterproof, and breathable. If trekkers wear hiking boots, they can be protected against harsh terrain and weather, and thus stay comfortable throughout their trip! Tourists should also keep outer socks, liner socks, and thermal socks. It is also smart to pack microspikes which fit to boots and provide extra traction.

Essentials

It is wise to carry essentials such as water bottles, sunscreen, a sleeping bag, towels, toilet paper, wet wipes, toothbrush, toothpaste, medicines, hand sanitizer, camera, spare batteries, insect repellant, travel pillows, soap, hand warmers, money, first aid kit, documents, and ear plugs.

Trekking Items

Carrying trekking poles is a great idea as they can reduce the impact on joints by up to 20%, making the climb easier and more comfortable. Waterproof, durable, and breathable trekking shoes are essential for a good trip. Gaiters are waterproof and windproof shoe covers that keep the shoes dry and safe from dust. On a trek at Kilimanjaro, these prove to be handy in navigating loose rocks. Aluminium hiking sticks are strong and helpful. Carrying a tent and sleeping bag is also important.
